Darkness Descends opens with a newly crafted version of “The Waiting Room”, previously released on the Darkness Calling Halloween 2022 charity compilation. The track starts with a menacing bassline that mingles with a bell tolling into a burst of old-school electro-funk percussions. Lyrically energized by the Twin Peaks character The Arm, Voix speaks of being a man from another place, disappearing and reappearing before a driving EBM bassline engulfs the track.

“Crystal Ball” continues the Darkness Descends journey. Influenced by contemporary ballroom/vogue-house artists Sugur Shane and Divioli S’Vere, the track combines the minimalist elements of vogue-house, adding harsher Sophie style samples and darker synths not typically associated with the genre. Voix taps into his passion for rapping and delivers two braggadocious verses.

Next is “Dark Disco” a minimal electropop track inspired by English synth-poppers Ladytron and Portland’s Italo disco darlings Glass Candy. The song has an arpeggiated bass synth that casually bounces along with a simple percussion rhythm, making it easy to bop along to. Lyrically, the song tells listeners to let down their hair and take their worries to the dance floor.

“Dying to Live” is the second Voix in the Dark track featured on the annual Darkness Calling Halloween charity compilation. The cult-classic horror film, The Return of the Living Dead serves as lyrical inspiration for the song. Sonically, “Dying to Live” has a pounding four-to-the-floor kick that is accompanied by a catchy EBM bassline. A ringing lead synth echos throughout the track while percussion samples from the movie tie together this dark dance anthem.

Lastly, on the Darkness Descends journey is the song “Witchcraft” featuring lyrics and vocals by musician Ricky Wrath of the Philadelphia indie-rock band The Maybe Nots. Musically, the song is a nod to dark post-punkers The Sisters of Mercy and has a mid-90s mainstream Industrial musical bridge that Nine Inch Nails most certainly inspires. Lyrically, Ricky Wrath sings of his Hot Topic teenage goth fantasy. “Witchcraft” will have goths from all generations swaying on the dance floor.
